What an IPL photofacial really costs

IPL is rarely a one off. Because the skin clears pigment gradually, results come from a course, so the realistic spend is the course rather than a single session. Here is an honest view of the ranges, what moves them, and why value matters more than the lowest price. All figures are indicative and vary by clinic, city and practitioner.

Indicative ranges

Full face, typically

United Kingdom, per sessionabout £150 to £400
United States, per sessionabout 300 to 600 US dollars
A course of three to six sessionsoften discounted as a package
Smaller areas, such as hands or décolletageusually less per session

Many clinics price a course as a bundle that works out cheaper per session than paying one at a time. Maintenance sessions once or twice a year are an ongoing cost to factor in. Always confirm with the clinic.

What moves the price

The device and operator

A medical grade IPL system in the hands of an experienced clinician costs more than a budget device, and the safer outcome is part of the value.

Area treated

A full face costs more than a targeted patch, and adding the neck, chest or hands raises the figure.

Number of sessions

More extensive sun damage or redness needs more sessions, which is the largest driver of total cost.

Consultation and assessment

A proper skin assessment and patch test add a little cost up front and reduce the risk of an expensive mistake.

Value versus cheapest

IPL settings have to be matched to your skin type, and getting that wrong can cause burns or lasting pigment change rather than a clearer complexion. A cut price session on an unsuitable skin type or a recent tan is the false economy to avoid, because correcting a burn or pigment problem costs far more than the saving. The value lies in the assessment, the correct device settings and an operator who will decline to treat when IPL is not right for you. Look for a clinician who patch tests, asks about recent sun exposure and medications, and is honest about what a course can and cannot achieve.
