On the day

Downtime
This is the key variable. Diligent aftercare and strict sun protection are essential while the skin heals.
Cadence and results

Real risks and downtime
Common and usually temporary effects include redness, swelling, tenderness, peeling and a sunburn like feeling, with deeper treatments meaning more of each. The risks that deserve real attention are changes in pigmentation, where the skin can become darker or lighter than before, and this is a higher risk in darker or tanned skin, which is why skin type assessment matters so much in a sunny city. There is also a risk of scarring, infection, prolonged redness and the reactivation of cold sores in people prone to them, particularly with ablative lasers. Sun exposure before or after treatment raises the risk of problems, so timing and sun protection are part of the plan. Laser resurfacing is generally avoided over active infection, on recently tanned skin, in pregnancy and with certain medications and conditions. Be realistic about results. Laser improves texture, tone and many scars meaningfully, but it cannot guarantee perfectly clear skin or remove every line or scar, and a clinic that promises that is overselling it.
